Industrial Design is a discipline that involves the design of objects, tools, appliances and complex technical equipment. It encompasses branches such as ceramic and glass, furniture, toys and games, textiles, mechanical, electrical, electronic products, packaging, retail and exhibition structures, etc. At the Institute of Design, Nirma University, product design is currently offered as part of the industrial design discipline, after completion of the foundation year.
The students are taught design methodology and creative thinking to become effective and innovative problem-solvers for end-users, communities, organizations, and industries. The training consists of courses that deal with theory, concepts, understanding materials and processes, prototyping skills, user studies, etc. Individual projects are the basis for outcome-based learning. Students develop ideas and concepts with sketches, 3D mock-up models, and finally, working prototypes which are tested in user context.
Learning is through assignments, classroom projects, industry visits, industry immersion through apprenticeship and internship programmes over the four years of study. Working on live projects with faculty mentors and visiting design experts is encouraged.
