Visit to Sarkhej Roza and Shreyas Museum with the Batch of 2024

On August 3, 2024, the batch of 2024 from the Institute of Design, Nirma University, embarked on an enriching orientation visit to two of Ahmedabad’s significant cultural landmarks: Sarkhej Roza and Shreyas Museum. Accompanied by Prof. Kanupriya Taneja and Prof. Ajay Goyal, this visit aimed to acquaint the new students with the city they will call home for the next four years.

Sarkhej Roza: Known as the “Acropolis of Ahmedabad,” this 15th-century complex blends Persian, Hindu, and Jain architectural styles, featuring a mosque, tombs, and pavilions. At Sarkhej Roza, students learned about historical construction techniques, spatial planning, and the use of geometric patterns and symmetry, enhancing their appreciation for architectural heritage.

Shreyas Museum: Established in 1977 by Leena Sarabhai, this museum showcases traditional art and crafts from Gujarat, including textiles, embroidery, beadwork, and tribal art. The guided tour of Shreyas Museum offered insights into traditional craft techniques and materials, highlighting the craftsmanship and artistic expression of local communities.

The visit provided students with a deep understanding of Ahmedabad’s rich cultural and historical landscape, crucial for informing and inspiring their design work. Students were inspired to incorporate elements of traditional art and architecture into their modern design projects, fostering a blend of old and new. The visits underscored the importance of interdisciplinary learning, where history, culture, and art converge to enrich design education.

Familiarizing themselves with the city helped students develop a sense of belonging and community, essential for their overall growth and engagement during their time at the university. The orientation visit laid a strong foundation for the students’ educational journey, equipping them with essential knowledge and inspiration that will shape their future design endeavours.
