    Admission Details

    Bachelor of Design (Industrial Design): 40 seats

    Total 80 seats
    Up to fifteen percent of intake is allocated for admission to NRI/NRI sponsored candidates.*

    Over and above the intake of 80, 15% (supernumerary) seats are also allocated for admissions to persons of Indian origin, foreign nationals and children of Indian workers of Gulf countries/South-East Asia.

    1. The candidates seeking admission in the first year of degree programme leading to Bachelor of Design (BDes) shall have passed the HSC examination (10+2) or any other recognised examination considered equivalent by Nirma University with minimum 50% aggregate mark.


    1. The candidates holding 10+3 diploma approved by State Board of Technical Education or any other board/university considered equivalent by Nirma University with minimum 50% aggregate marks will also be eligible.

    Filling Online Application Form

      1. Applicants should register a new user account in the website of Institute of Design, Nirma University to log into the online application form. The login details will be used for filling the admission form and checking the status of the application later.
      2. After successful login, the admission form will be displayed.
      3. Applicants need to fill their information in the online application form available on the website, with payment of the non-refundable application processing fees. The application processing fees under various categories are as follows:

    The selection process of admission to the Bachelor of Design programme consists of the following stages:

    1.Entrance examination:
    A. UCEED 2021 – Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design conducted by IIT Bombay.

    Admissions to the Bachelor of Design (BDes) programmes at Nirma University is done through the shared results of the Undergraduate Common Entrance Examination for Design (UCEED) score conducted by IIT Bombay, the organising institute of the UCEED exam.

    Students who passed Class XII (or equivalent) in 2020 or appearing in 2021, in  ANY STREAM (Science, Commerce or Arts and Humanities) are eligible to appear for UCEED 2021. For more details, please visit the website:


    B. NU-DET 2021Design Entrance Test conducted by Institute of Design, Nirma University

    Admission to the Bachelor of Design (BDes) programmes at Nirma University is done through the Design Entrance Test conducted by the Institute of Design, Nirma University for the students who have not appeared in UCEED examination or those who would like to have an option of considering NU-DET score for final selection.

    C. Situation Test and Personal Interview:

    The applicants shortlisted by the Admissions Committee, on the basis of performance in the UCEED/NU-DET will be invited for a Situation Test and Personal Interview.

    1. The Situation Test will evaluate the design aptitude of applicants with the objective of measuring their skills in 2D and 3D visualisation, creativity, handling of materials and dexterity.

    2. Personal Interview of candidates will evaluate general awareness, aptitude and interests, quality of responses to social and cultural issues and candidates’ ability to articulate their thoughts through creative work done by them.

    (This could include drawings, paintings, photographs, films/videos made by the student, craft work, project work, models, written work such as articles, stories, essays, poems, etc. This may be presented to the interview panel. Students should limit the portfolio to a maximum of 10 of their works in total.)

    The international students can apply under one of the following two categories:

    i.     Category 1 : Foreign nationals having non-Indian passports (FN), OR foreign students having a non-Indian passport and also having the OCI or PIO card (OCI/PIO) can apply under OCI/PIO/FN supernumerary category that has 10% seats reserved.

    ii.    Category 2 : Students whose parents are currently working in Gulf countries or South-East Asia can apply under CIWGC-SEA supernumerary category that has 5% seats reserved. The students must hold Indian passports and should have passed the qualifying exams either from India or outside of India.

    NRI students who have passed their qualifying examination from outside India will be exempted from giving the entrance test. Their evaluation for merit will be based on the minimum qualifying marks as per Nirma University rules of Higher Secondary Education or equivalent exam of the country of residence, Skype interview, two letters of recommendation from senior school teachers and a portfolio shared through e-mail.

    * NOTE: Applicants not present on the scheduled date and time of the situation test and/or for the personal interview will forfeit their chance for admission to the programme.

    * Students who have appeared for UCEED 2021 will be entitled to an additional 10% marks on the obtained UCEED scores in the overall total.

    3. School Leaving Certificate or Transfer Certificate
    4. Diploma Examination Mark-sheet, if applicable

    Additional documents to be submitted by NRI/NRI sponsored category applicants:

    1. Proof of residence of sponsor (applicable to NRI sponsored applicant)
    2. Passport of self and his/her mother and / or father (applicable to NRI applicant)
    3. Affidavit from sponsoring person (applicable to NRI sponsored only)
    4. Equivalence Certificate from Association of Indian Universities, New Delhi (if an applicant has passed a qualifying examination from outside India)
    5. Any other relevant certificate

    Successful candidates will be made an offer of provisional admission to join the Institute of Design at Nirma University, subject to fulfilling minimum eligibility criteria. Candidates will be informed through e-mails provided in the online application form at every stage of admission. Applicants are therefore advised to check the updates on the website and their respective e-mail IDs at regular intervals. The institute will not be responsible for non-receipt or delay of any communication which is sent to the candidate’s e-mail ID provided in the admission application form.

    Provisional offer of admission will be valid only for the particular programme opted by the candidate in the given academic session.

    The merit list does not give guarantee for admission to BDes Programme. The admission will purely be based on merit, verification of original documents and fulfilment of minimum eligibility criteria for admission to the programme.

    Bachelor of Design is a residential programme. Students admitted in the programme are required to stay in a hostel. During the first year of study, the students would be accommodated in an off campus arranged accommodation and second year onwards the students would be accommodated on the campus hostel. The fee for the hostel and related charges will be intimated at the time of admission.
