Treewalk Community Inspires Sustainability and Nature Connection

The Semester IV, Communication Design batch-2023 at the Institute of Design, Nirma University, participated in an inspiring session with the Treewalk Community on December 20, 2024. Led by Mr Lokendra Balasaria and Ms Rini Balasaria, Treewalks is a charitable initiative founded in 2013 that addresses 18 environmental issues in urban areas. The session focused on reconnecting with nature, sustainable practices, and environmental awareness.

During the talk, Mr. Balasaria highlighted the urgency of tackling climate change, emphasizing that 300 fully grown trees are needed to offset the carbon footprint of a single large car. He advocated for responsible waste management, bioenzyme use, and reducing toxins in everyday life. The couple shared anecdotes about their tree walks and experiences with animals, such as communicating with monkeys to protect their garden, showcasing the harmony achievable between humans and nature.

The discussion extended to water management, rainwater harvesting, and the importance of planting flowering trees to support bee populations. Mr Balasaria also introduced the students to Ayurvedic principles, illustrating how natural remedies can heal without harmful side effects. The session concluded with students sharing their own home remedies for common ailments, fostering a collaborative learning atmosphere.

The following day, December 21, marked World Meditation Day by meditating around the trees and included a treewalk around the Institute of Design campus. Students and faculty learnt about native and non-native tree species. Mr Balasaria distributed seeds of seasonal plants and waterproof tags to identify trees for future reference. He emphasised planting trees based on their ecological value rather than decorative appeal.

The walk concluded with a guided meditation under the trees, where participants were encouraged to connect deeply with nature. Some students reported feeling a sense of calm and communication with the trees, while others noticed an increased presence of birds around them.

This holistic experience bridged the gap between theory and practice, leaving students and faculty with a profound understanding of sustainability and their role in fostering an environmentally conscious future. Treewalk Community’s mission to inspire action resonated deeply, creating lasting impressions on everyone involved.
