About

  • Dr. Monikuntala Das is a design educator, researcher and practitioner working at the intersection of sustainable design, craft, material innovation, visual communication and design education. She holds a PhD in Design from IIT Guwahati, where her doctoral research focused on developing guidelines for craftspeople’s bamboo products aligned with the UN Sustainable Development Goals 2030. She has worked across SPA Bhopal, NID Madhya Pradesh, DIT University and UID Karnavati University, alongside her industry experience as a Founding Member of Studio Biophilic, a sustainable architecture and design practice. Her research and practice explore bamboo as a socio-cultural, ecological and economic system, connecting traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design and industry. She has presented and published her work internationally at forums including the World Bamboo Congress, Taiwan; Design Commit, Portugal; E&PDE, Glasgow; ICED, Bordeaux; and the SiDE Symposium associated with IIT Delhi and TU Delft. Her contributions include serving as a Subject Matter Expert for NCERT’s Bamboo Work Artisan textbooks and conducting interdisciplinary workshops that bring together students, artisans, academia and industry. Her current interests include sustainable and craft-based design, material innovation, emotional durability, visual communication and translating research into meaningful, practice-led design education.
