Synopsis
Devdas loves his childhood friend, Parvati, but cannot marry her because she is poor and of a lower caste. The introverted silent man does not know how to confront his family or fight social prejudice and instead turns to drinking, ultimately destroying himself.

About the Director
Bimal Roy was an Indian film director. He is particularly noted for his realistic and socialistic films, such as Do Bigha Zamin (1953), Bandini (1963), Biraj Bahu (1954), and Madhumati (1958), which he employed to portray realism. He won several awards throughout his career, including eleven Filmfare Awards, two National Film Awards, and the International Prize of the Cannes Film Festival.
