Welcoming the Future of Design: Orientation Week at Institute of Design

The Institute of Design at Nirma University kickstarted its 9th Orientation Programme with an engaging and vibrant week-long celebration welcoming the incoming Bachelor of Design batch (2025–2029). From July 1 to July 11, 2025, students experienced a thoughtfully curated blend of academic insights, creative workshops, and community-building activities to mark the beginning of their design journey.

A Grand Inauguration

The orientation commenced on July 1 with student registration at IMNU Foyer, followed by a grand inaugural ceremony held at the M Block Auditorium. The program began with a warm welcome address by Prof. Sangita Shroff, Director of the Institute of Design. Dr. Anup K. Singh, Director-General of Nirma University, delivered the presiding address, setting an inspiring tone for the batch. The highlight of the morning was the keynote by Ms. Nishma Pandit, renowned industrial designer and founder of Ticket Design, Pune. Her talk offered fresh perspectives on the evolving role of design in everyday life.

Academic Introductions and Policies

Post-lunch sessions were focused on familiarizing students with university policies. Dr. Ajay Goyal and Dr. Kanupriya Taneja explained the academic and examination frameworks. The day concluded with an engaging welcome ceremony introducing the students to faculty members and fellow batchmates, led by Prof. Mona Prabhu and Dr. Saroj K. Das.

Expert Talks: A Glimpse into the World of Design

Throughout the week, students were treated to insightful expert talks from eminent voices in the design world. These included:

  • Dr. Mandar Rane from IDC, IIT Bombay, who discussed the essence of design thinking in “Understanding Design.”
  • Dr. Lakshmi Murthy, Human-Centered Design expert from Jatan Sansthan, Udaipur, who led a thought-provoking session on “Social Design.”
  • Mr. Jaymin Modi, a filmmaker from Ahmedabad, who introduced the world of “Moving Images” and its role in visual storytelling.

These sessions inspired students to think beyond aesthetics and consider the social impact and communication potential of design.

Hands-On Workshops: Learning by Doing

Creative exploration was at the heart of the orientation, with immersive workshops running across multiple days:

  • Theatre Workshop: Led by Preeti Das and Sushil Yati, this session invited students to explore storytelling, expression, and collaboration through the lens of theatre.
  • Papercraft Safari: Conducted by Prince Agarwal and Prof. Pradipta Biswas, students learned to construct low-poly animal models, fusing precision with playful creativity.
  • Mask Making Workshop: Guided by Dr. Shree Kant and Dr. Sarojkumar Das, this hands-on activity encouraged students to delve into emotional expression through mask design.

These workshops were conducted in the ID and C Blocks and allowed students to bond while exploring different facets of material, form, and communication.

Student Life and Safety

Sessions on university support systems were integral to the orientation. Topics included:

  • Anti-Ragging and Grievance Cell
  • Classroom Etiquette
  • Women Development Cell
  • Introduction to the Student Activity Council and Welfare Board
  • Counselling and Medical Services
  • Library Resources and Campus Tour

These sessions ensured that every student is aware of the resources available to them, promoting a safe, inclusive, and well-supported environment.

Connecting Through Community

One of the most heartwarming sessions was Alumni Speak, where past graduates such as Mr. Prince Agarwal, Mr. Jugal Gajjar, and Mr. Ghanshyam Panchal shared their journeys from classrooms to careers, offering inspiration and real-world insight.

The orientation concluded with a final presentation of workshop projects on July 11. Students showcased what they had learned to peers and faculty, closing the programme on a high note with energy, creativity, and pride.
